THE WINES OF TERRA ALTA

The recommended grape varieties are White Grenache, Red Grenache, Garnacha peluda, Macabeo and Samsó. These five varieties make up 75% of the vines planted in the Terra Alta Designation of Origin.
In general, the other classified varieties are mid-season and late-ripening grapes due to the terroir’s features. This means the production area’s winegrowing can be carried out on non-traditional sites.

TYPES OF WINERIES

The Regulatory Council’s Wineries Register includes all the people and companies owning winemaking undertakings which work with protected wines:

  • They produce: producer wineries
  • They store: wineries which are not producers
  • They age: ageing wineries
  • They package: packaging and/or bottling wineries

Three out of four registered wineries are engaged in all three key processes of production, ageing and packaging in the value chain, and only a small number of them perform these processes separately or in isolation.

There is another extremely distinctive aspect found in most of the wineries: the ownership of the vineyards. Whether under family ownership or in cooperative associations, this makes it easier to manage wine production.
